Cap'n Tim

Cap'n Tim Rutherford's Boating History. Something caught my attention around age 13 that drew me towards sailing ships.  Listening to late night Captain Horatio Hornblower stories on the radio mesmerized and tantalized my imagination.  Soon I was spending all the money I could on model ships.  First it was the small 6 piece plastic ships and gradually moving up to the 3 foot models with all the rigging.  The "Constitution" was my most challenging.

There was nothing locally to entice me there's just high desert and sagebrush in central Wyoming.  It was not until I was in the Air Force that I had a chance to be around boats, albeit small ones while stationed in Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam (yeah, I'm one of those vets).  I managed to be allowed to administer practical exams for qualification to use their small fleet of fishing and skiing boats.  I also became acquainted with Navy personnel and was eventually given sailing lessons on their lake borne fleet of sunfish, razors, and catamarans.  I had a great teacher and moved quickly through the fleet to finally be allowed to enjoy the speed and thrills of a 14 foot Hobie cat.

The Ozymandias 41' Sailing Vessel

The 41' Morgan was designed by Ted Brewer for Morgan Yachts and built in the Tampa, FL area.  Mr. Brewer's primary thoughts in design were towards comfort for guests of charter cruise companies.  The vessel has a shoal draft necessary for cruising the Bahamas and the Keys.  The heavy keel and the wide beam allow her to stand upright in heavier winds.  Ozymandias is truly a comfortable cruising boat. The guest quarters include a private restroom, with electric head, shower head, vanity with a large mirror, and ample storage space.

The private V-Berth features a nautical theme with room for two adults. There are two hanging lockers, vanity space and an additional optional storage shelf for those who do not like to pack light.

The modern dining salon is roomy, comfortable and features a flat screen TV with extensive library of movies, stereo with XM Radio, and a comfortable computer/writing desk. There is also an Internet connection on occasion.

The galley is equipped with a 2 burner LP stove, a freezer, and a refrigerator.

Testimonials

Cruising in the Bahamas was an experience of a lifetime. There are so many beautiful islands and beaches to comb. The people are hospitable and uncomplicated. Here are a couple of my favorite photos.

Captain Tim charters for the Boy Scouts of America in Islamorada, Florida during the summer months.

The Boy Scout High Adventure camp charters 28 to 32 vessels at least 41 feet in length for 5 1/2 day excursions.  Four boats leave daily with crew aboard.  The crews consist of at least two counselors and no more than six scouts aged 14 to 18.  They board after dinner the first day and begin the adventure seeing their first sunset aboard the vessel.  The boats take two days to reach Key West while the crew sails, snorkels, and fishes on the way.  Most crew have never done any of this so the learning curve is tremendous.  An evening is spent in Key West, then it's back to the sea for another two nights at anchor and three days of the sailing life.  The boys are reminded of their knot tying skills, and taught line handling, anchoring, boating courtesy, navigation, using GPS, depth gauge, Autopilot, and hopefully about sailing.
