About the name "Ozymandias"
The name of our boat derives from the
poem "Ozymandias" from the Greek.
The name
was made famous by a sonnet written by Percy Bysshe Shelley
and published in 1818. The Shelley sonnet "Ozymandias" tends
to portray a feeling of woe as it only depicts our eventual
demise rather than the worth we exhibit in our lives. We feel
that Ramses II is challenging us to try to excel, not only for
ourselves but our country and humanity. The actual inscription
on the pedestal of his memorial may evidence this – "King of
Kings am I, Ozymandias. If anyone would know how great I am
and where I lie, let him surpass one of my works." Ozymandias
was pharaoh of Egypt for nearly 67 years in a time when the
life span was less than 40 years. He turned the kingdom over
to his son and lived another 5 years before he died around age
92. You just didn't live that long if you tended to antagonize
your kingdom as the Shelley poem seems to indicate...which may
be another secret to a long life.
